Mountain guiding

Mountain guiding tradition in Trenta

In the second half of the 19th century, people became more interested in the mountains and a number of Trenta men earned fame as excellent mountain guides.

Most famous are the mountain guides who accompanied Julius Kugy. Kugy was an excellent mountaineer and although he visited a number of areas in the Alps, the Trenta valley always had a special place in his heart. Kugy's first Trenta guide was Anton Tožbar, but on more demanding mountaineering tours Kugy was accompanied by Andrej Komac – Mota for more than 20 years. However, the two did not venture on audacious, winter treks without a third man Jože Komac – Pavr. Accompanied by mountain guides from Trenta, Kugy also performed several ascents in other parts of Slovenia and abroad.

Mountain guiding today

Tours of the broader region, under the guidance of expert Triglav National Park guides could be arranged.

More demanding mountaineering and alpinist tours, sport climbing or winter tours could be arranged by IFMGA mountain guides. Experienced Slovenian mountaineers who have already made a required number of summer and winter ascents in the mountains of Slovenia and around the world and have passed a three-year training according to the programme of International Mountain Guide Association IFMGA, are joined in the Slovenian Association of Mountain Guides.
